Welcome to the Ottawa Philatelic Society, Canada's oldest and largest stamp club.  Our members enjoy stamp collecting, exhibiting, buying, selling and trading stamps, covers and post cards.  Our members and other Ottawa area philatelists refer to the society as the "OPS."

The Ottawa Philatelic Society was formed in 1891 by the founder of the "Canadian Philatelic Society," John Reginald Hooper.  It was established as la Société Philatélique d'Ottawa, and the membership contained 41 names, of which 16 were francophone.

Our membership is comprised of senior civil servants, teachers, nurses, doctors, students, retirees, high technology workers, white collar and blue collar workers.  With over 70 members, the OPS of today still reflects the bilingual and bicultural nature of the club of 115 years ago, and that of the City of Ottawa.

We meet to cultivate friendship and fraternity among philatelists, postal historians, and others interested in philatelic matters.  In doing so, we assist members in acquiring and disposing of stamps and philatelic material.  We encourage ethical practices in every aspect of philately and postal history.  We also promote exhibiting one's collection.

The OPS has one of the best philatelic libraries in Canada.  The society provides up-to-date Scott Catalogues and many periodicals and specialised books that members may borrow on a weekly basis.

Our weekly program is what keeps the OPS active and attractive.  We have guest speakers, floor and table auctions, quizzes, single-, four- and eight-page competitions, dealer nights, flea markets, kilo nights, andshow and tell evenings.  We also hold dinners to celebrate Christmas, St. Valentine's Day, and a successful year.

In addition, the OPS is a proud sponsor of ORAPEX, the annual national stamp show and exhibition, held in Ottawa.  We also staff the ORAPEX Youth Booth, offering free stamps, advice and prizes to young stamp collectors.

The OPS also promotes stamp collecting by cooperating with Canada Post Corporation and Ian Kimmerly Stamps.
