A QUICK OVERVIEW........

Below are posted notes on some of the technical solutions and sense of styles we have employed throughout this website.  We suggest reading through at least once to get a feel of how best to take advantage of the many features within.

HEADINGS........

Headings will always be posted in Large Yellow Letters.  These provide a "snapshot" and point of reference to the content on the hosted page.

Italics......

Periodically, paragraphs in italics will be used solely for the purpose of explaining the technical or conceptual vision of various areas within the website.  These are used almost exclusively by the webmaster. Also, italics will be used in proper grammatical context where titles are affected.  Finally, in the OPS minutes area, yellow italics will indicate areas in which an amendment to the minutes, approved by the President or Vice President, have been provided.

Yellow Letters in Text.........

In several areas of this website, keywords will be highlighted with yellow text.  This is used with the intent of drawing attention to the key components of that block of text.  An example is found below taken from our list of upcoming events.

Example:

March is "United States Month" at the OPS.  This, the first meeting of the month will be an open meeting, followed by the convening of the Great Britain Study Group.  This week the group will host its usual show-and-tell session followed by an open discussion dealing with.......  For more information, please contact David Madeley.

Red Dates........

Thursday, February 13, 2011

In most cases, blocks of text or images will be accompanied by a date in red.  These dates indicate when this material was first posted, or in few instances when it was last revised.

Horizontal Lines.........

Deep Red Horizontal Lines are used throughout the website.  When used singly, they indicate a break in a discussion, which is followed by another posting within the context of the previous discussion.  When used doubly, they indicate that the discussion has ended and an entirely differing discussion begins thereafter.

How to use our Sitemap !

By clicking this "globe" (at left) found throughout the website, viewers will be presented with an easy to follow table of contents or "sitemap".  From here, you can navigate around most effectively.

Internet Links.........

Throughout the website, numerous links to other websites or useful pages within this website will be provided.  These may appear in one of two fashions.

First, the light blue standard "link" will indicate the name of the referral site, and by clicking these links, a new page will open for the viewer. In most instances the viewer will be redirected to a separate website, no longer under the jurisdiction of this one.

Second, an oval picture "button", will be used to redirect viewers to useful pages within this website.  As an alternative, any viewer can navigate throughout the site by using the table along the left margin.  Subcategories will appear at the bottom of this list.

EXAMPLE 1:

(this will redirect you to the Ottawa Philatelic Society Homepage)

EXAMPLE 2 :

By clicking the oval button, you will be redirected to "THE ARCHIVE" page found within this website

Password Protected Areas.......

While the majority of areas within this website will remain fully accessible to the public, certain components will have "protected password" access only.  These areas are sensitive to the members of the OPS.  In such cases, a box will appear asking for you, the viewer, to enter the password.  Passwords will be made available only by the Secretary or, with respect to the online marketplace, the webmaster(s).

Please Note: The "Password Login " block below is for illustration purposes only and will not accept entries.

Notes on Images........

Our hobby is extensively a visual one.  Currently, this website utilizes a broad range of resources by which images might be posted.  In most cases, where philatelic material is being used for education purposes, a blown-up image can be attained simply by clicking on the image desired.  You can try this on the "airplane stamp" below.

When an item is being offered in a retail type environment, the images may also include a "magnifying feature" that will allow the viewer to greatly enhance the image for close-up inspection. An example of this feature can be seen by moving your cursor/mouse over the "Queen Victoria Jubilee Stamp" further down this page.

Finally, in some instances, for the practical use of space, a scrolling image library will be provided.  The viewer will often have control of viewing this image library at their own pace and/or zoom in/out to a comfortable viewing level.  One such option of this slideshow feature is illustrated with the Malayan States presentation below.

EXAMPLE:

Click on the image and it will open for full viewing.  To close, click the "X" box at lower right.

EXAMPLE:

The Photo Gallery "Slideshow" will allow progressive images to be viewed.  The viewer can enlarge the presentation by click the "expand" box at lower right, and return to normal size by click the "reduce" box, also at lower right. The viewer can also move forward at any time by clicking the arrow point to right (found in lower right corner).

EXAMPLE:

The following is an example from the online marketplace.  It should be apparent that by moving your mouse/cursor over the image it will produce a magnified image of the stamp.  No need to click.  This example has been posted here for illustrative purposes only.

Notes on Downloads.........

This website will try to avoid downloads whenever possible, and hopefully post material directly onto this site.  In the event that larger files or image libraries are intended for use, the viewer will be invited to download such files directly onto their computers for viewing.  In ALL instances, these downloads will be hosted on behalf of this website by a third party (ie Adobe).  It should be understood that such downloads are subject to the legal and ethical use of the OPS as well as subject to the guidlines imposed by the software provider.  In some instances, downloads will also be password protected and/or made available for a limited "borrowing" period.

EXAMPLE:

By clicking on the following "Download" Link, you will add the list of OPS library holdings onto you computer, which will open in Excel Format in which it was produced.   Once the options appear, click "OPEN" (recommended) to view here, or click "DOWNLOAD" to save onto your computer.
